On September 12, the American Council of Engineering Companies of Kansas (ACEC-Kansas) presented the City of Overland Park, Affinis Corp, and Miles Excavating with their 2016 Engineering Excellence Award for the 159th Street Improvements between Quivira Road and Antioch Road. Selected earlier this year, the 2-mile thoroughfare project improved safety, increased roadway capacity, and spurred further development efforts. This was also the first project to apply the city’s stormwater and BMP ordinance along a transportation corridor with limited right-of-way.
The Engineering Excellence Award recognizes clients, contractors, and design professionals who have demonstrated innovative and outstanding engineering. Projects submitted for the award are evaluated on five categories:
1. Uniqueness and/or innovative applications of new or existing techniques
2. Future value to the engineering profession and perception of the public
3. Social, economic, and sustainable considerations
4. Project complexity
5. Successful fulfillment of client/owner’s needs
This complex project was successful, because of our working relationship with the city and the contractor. With strong leadership and direction and a project team, who anticipated challenges and provided solutions throughout design and construction, the project was completed five months ahead of schedule and $1 million under budget.
