Brush Creek at Mission Road and W. 68th Street Flood Control Project
Brush Creek, which runs parallel to Mission Road, was significantly overtopping the roadway when it rained. Homes in the area were also impacted by the flooding. The City of Prairie Village was looking for a solution that would protect residents without affecting a neighboring community downstream.
Our team was selected for this complex project. We started by conducting a hydraulic analysis. The creek was modeled with HEC-RAS, and we used PCSWMM to analyze the storm sewer pipe system. This helped inform our design.
Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) sought to update their sewer system as well. To keep disruptions to a minimum, they wanted to make their improvements while our project was under construction. We coordinated efforts with them and developed plans for their effort too.
To eliminate flooding, we raised Mission Road and upsized multiple pipes. We also added new pipes and drainage inlets to their storm system, as well as flap gates to the creek. In addition, the banks of the channel were regraded to improve flow capacity, and a retaining wall was built to protect the homes and landscape around Brush Creek. These changes helped lower the water surface elevation.
