Olathe On-Call Stormwater
The City of Olathe, Kansas is working to address flooding issues and maintain or rehabilitate the storm sewer system through its on-call services contract with Affinis. To achieve this, we have performed the following services over the last several years:
- Hydrologic and hydraulic analysis
- Preliminary Engineering Studies
- Storm sewer design
- Grading and drainage improvements
- Surveying
Recently, we focused on two preliminary engineering studies (PESs) to address local flooding, storm sewer replacement, and channel erosion issues. Both PESs included a hydrology and hydraulic analysis of the existing conditions. These were used to determine runoff characteristics and identify flood areas to establish eligibility for Johnson County stormwater funding. Proposed improvement alternatives were conceptually designed to address the flooding, and a preferred alternative was recommended based on a variety of factors, including: total project cost, property impacts, and ongoing operation and maintenance costs.
In preparing PESs for the city, we provide a detailed level of analysis to help identify potential design challenges, as well as project impacts to city infrastructure, private utilities, and adjacent residents. Our preliminary cost estimates reflect these potential design challenges and project impacts, so the city can budget appropriately for the project and avoid unexpected costs as the project moves forward.
