Route HH at I-29
The Route HH and I-29 intersection often leaves drivers confused. The off-ramp from southbound I-29 leads directly into a two-way frontage road at the intersection of Vine Street. Many drivers on the frontage road have driven the wrong way onto the off-ramp. These drivers have the potential to enter I-29 driving the wrong way. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) wanted to address the issue and create a safer environment.
To kick-off the project, we conducted a topographic survey. Mobile LiDAR was used to gather data in this high traffic area. It made collection more efficient and safe.
Next, our design team conducted a conceptual study. They examined seven different options, involving the intersection and ramps. After reviewing the report, MoDOT decided to construct a roundabout at Vine Street. This would eliminate the opportunity for cars to go the wrong way.
In addition to the roundabout, MoDOT will be making improvements to the northbound I-29 ramps, including a deceleration lane and adding a right-turn lane to the northbound off-ramp. Along with the ramp improvements, we will also be repairing a slide on the south side of Route HH – just west of the northbound ramps. For this project, we will conduct the survey and design the roadway and structural elements. Our traffic team will be developing a plan for the pavement markings and traffic signing as well.
