Route 7, from Pink Hill Rd. to Victor Dr., in Blue Springs, Missouri was deteriorating. To maintain their standard, the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Lee’s Summit Office (MoDOT) wanted to resurface this 3.32 miles of roadway. They selected our construction engineering team to oversee the project.

For this effort, we supervised the full-depth patching of 5-lanes. Entire sections were removed and filled with concrete. Then, Ideker, Inc., the contractor, performed a mill and overlay over these areas. Our team also set-up testing for the asphalt and concrete and measured striping.

This project site intersected with I-70 and is located in the middle of Blue Springs. This made traffic control particularly important for this effort. MoDOT wanted to limit the project’s impact to traffic flow. We let people know what we would be doing and how they could traverse the area. We also reached out to surrounding businesses to keep them informed of our plans.

Route 7 is a 4-lane, divided highway with a turn lane in the middle. Our traffic control plan had to keep at least one if not two lanes open at all times. Ideker was only allowed to work at night, so that is when our team was on-site to oversee their work. We were willing to be there on our client’s behalf no matter the hour.

Along with monitoring the contractor’s work, our team also kept daily diaries, outlining what was happening on site. They tracked quantities for all pay apps and documented the project by taking photos. They also measured all the millings by hand with a wheel, and as paving was marked, they marked the locations of all the cores that were to be taken for testing.

Communication and collaboration are the keys to success for any project. This one was no exception. Our team was responsible for coordinating between MoDOT and the contractor. We relayed information between both parties and worked to resolve issues as they arose.

The completed project provides a smooth and safe pathway for residents and visitors of Blue Springs. Having our team on site helped keep this project on track. By continually investing in their infrastructure, MoDOT is supporting area businesses and moving communities forward.
