On May 16, we closed our office for the afternoon to support a local organization, reStart, which has been working to end homelessness in Kansas City since 1981. Over the years, they’ve served more than 28,406 homeless individuals, including 11,174 children and youth. They provide housing and supportive services to men, women, youth, and families. It is an organization we’ve been proud to team with and support through volunteer efforts over the years.
For this particular project, reStart is working with United Community Services of Johnson County to prepare housing for 18 to 22-year-old adults who would otherwise be homeless. To prepare for the work in Olathe, we held a short informational meeting in our office and asked co-workers to sign up for specific jobs.
Together, we helped get both sides of a duplex move-in ready, so the space can be ready for use on June 1. Although one side was nearly finished, we helped deep clean, remove wallpaper, paint, and clean the carpet in it. On the other half, we stripped wallpaper, cleared out a basement, and demoed and cleaned out a bathroom. We also worked in the yard and cleared out a shed.
